Abstract

A dog runs at the speed of v and swims at the speed of u < v. If the dog is at point A on the straight shoreline and tries to get to a ball in the water at point B in the least time, what path should the dog take?

In this article, we discuss three solutions to this optimization problem. The first one uses a discriminant of a quadratic equation with a parameter, the second uses relative velocity. The third approach solves the problem by geometric construction.
